Barenboim protégé and Siberian superstar violinist Maxim Vengerov has been coming to Chicago to perform since he was a teenaged prodigy and he and Barenboim have teamed up for some of the finest performances of the Barenboim era. Vengerov was originally scheduled to do a full violin recital with Barenboim as pianist and was also to have performed the Shostakovich Violin Concerto No. 1 with the CSO at these concerts, but the recital was cancelled and the Shostakovich was switched to the Mozart Violin Concerto No. 4, a tad bizarre since Mozart has never really been Venegerov’s forte. Stravinsky’s “The Rite of Spring,” however, has always been a tour de force for both Barenboim and the CSO, and the opportunity for them to raise the roof one last time should be memorable indeed. Webern’s Symphony, Op. 21 fills out the program. (Dennis Polkow)
