While these things are normally super fucking lame, Guitar Center actually put together an interesting event to rival the annual festival downtown, as they toured the country to find the best unknown blues guitarist and made them go head-to-head, all Ralph-Macchio-versus-Stevie-Vai-in-“Crossroads”-style. Tonight’s the finals, and sure enough blues legend B.B. King judges and performs. Then when it was announced that John Mayer would also be performing, it sold out quite quickly, surely faster than any event at Grant Park this weekend. While the Grammy-winning Mayer gently fails with his alternative light rock, he seems to genuinely understand the dynamics of blues and he’s a helluva guitar player. Should be a fun, though a bit campy, evening. (Tom Lynch)
