In a rare appearance by one of Chicago’s best bands, the startlingly smart 90 Day Men hit the Empty Bottle stage with its searing, progressive post-rock, pulled straight from the anthologies of Tortoise and Shellac. “Panda Park” and “To Everybody” are two of the finest Chicago releases this century, as guitars weave and wiggle among keyboards, inventive drums and Brian Case’s piercing vocal delivery. The sheer instrumental skill of the band out-maneuvers other similar outfits—it truly is something to behold even if, for you, occasionally overdone musical complexity grows tiresome after a while. Even still, catch the band now—there are no shows scheduled in the near future, beside the Intonation Festival, and the last show before this was in early 2005. (Tom Lynch)
