The Smoking Popes and Duvall leader hits the small stage this week for two different shows, both of which should properly display his range, lounge-lizard vocal intrigue and songwriting gusto. At Hideout, Caterer covers the songs of Hank Williams, Sr., and as he proved on the Popes’ last record, “The Party’s Over,” he has quite a talent for channeling the songs of yore. If you’re not into the whole BBQ and illegal fireworks thing for the Fourth, Caterer starts his July residency at Schubas on Tuesday; no word on what Caterer plans to play, but I would expect some covers, some vintage Popes and maybe (finally!) some new material. Opening is another lovelorn Chicago staple, everyone’s favorite attorney-musician, Elizabeth Elmore, of The Reputation and Sarge. (Tom Lynch)
Josh Caterer plays June 29 at Hideout, 1354 West Wabansia, (773)227-4433, at 9:30pm, $8, and July 4 at Schubas, 3159 North Southport, (773)525-2508, at 9pm. $8.
