I didn’t jump on the Dressy Bessy wagon until last summer’s “Electrified,” but now, going back to the previous records, everything makes more sense. The bubblegum, sweet-tooth pop sounds gloriously reminiscent of all-girl sixties outfits, less serious than the more contemporary That Dog, but more advanced than The Donnas. “Electrified” took the band a bit deeper as it amped up the distortion and, for the first time, really sounded like a bona fide rock band, not just jingles and candy. Smartly coupled with the Denver quartet is the Chicago duo The Like Young, whose recent “Last Secrets” is the band’s most compact, focused release to date, even though it may lack some of the charm of the twosome’s “Art Contest” and “So Serious.” Either way, it’s a strong, striking record of art-pop precision and delight.
