Danceable emo-pop from Fall Out Boy Pete Wentz’s Decaydence Records, Las Vegas four-piece Panic! At the Disco focus on energy and lyricism throughout “A Fever You Can’t Sweat Out,” with strong vocal deliveries and catchy hooks, reminiscent of, well, Fall Out Boy. While the comparison’s inevitable, PATD’s use of electronic programming and its knack for complexly organizing structures in its songs make the band more complicated than FOB, and not as musically delirious. The band’s first single, “The Only Difference Between Martyrdom and Suicide is Press Coverage”—terrible, adolescent title that reminds us of how easily emo kids can go wrong—travels beyond its name and turns into a rock-solid pop song, fusing both new era emo with mid-nineties alternative-rock.
