This is a Bruckner town and the Chicago Symphony has made Bruckner its own for decades now, so you have to hand it to the Grant Park Orchestra for sheer chutzpah in programming the most popular of Bruckner’s large-scale symphonies as part of its “10 Symphonies Within 10 Weeks” initiative for an entire program within blocks of Orchestra Hall. One hopes that guest conductor Emmanuel Villaume will not treat the Bruckner Seventh as a brass concerto, which has often been the approach of Grant Park principal conductor Carlos Kalmar to these late-Romantic Viennese scores when he has attempted to tackle them here.
