Complicated and roaring, Maps and Atlases’ “Tree, Swallows, Houses” could give you a tumor if you pay too much attention. Fusing math-rock and Joan of Arc emo, the frenzied and frenetic nature of the seven songs immediately impress with their freakshow delivery and difficult, scientific approach. The clean, undistorted guitars help—you can hear every specific guitar note hit directly, and the unpredictability of the drums and originative, pulsing bass put you on the edge. You don’t know what to expect, what’s going to happen. You don’t even know who you are anymore. Live, it’s awe-inspiring—the band’s precision impresses to a disturbing degree, unforgettable to say the least. Warning: multiple listens in one day might make the voices in your head suggest you kill your family. (Tom Lynch)
