Joe Segal is stretching things a bit to bring in John Coltrane’s legendary drummer Roy Haynes and his quartet to open up his eighty-first annual “August is Charlie Parker Month,” but the irony is that Haynes did play with Parker for a time before meeting up with Coltrane. No matter: any excuse to hear Haynes swing, as he did so tastefully during last year’s eightieth-birthday salute at the Chicago Jazz Festival, should be relished. Watch bebop purist Segal, who is a year younger than Haynes, wince when Haynes and his young band—including saxophonist Marcus Strickland, pianist Martin Bejarano and bassist John Sullivan—lay down some funk along the way.
