No, this is not a misprint. Dr. Octagon is alive and well and back on tour. One of Kool Keith’s many demented guises, Dr. Octagon was supposedly murdered by Dr. Doom (another Keith creation) back in 1999, but apparently wasn’t able to finish off the job. Unfortunately, after hearing the new record, “The Return of Dr. Octagon,” I think it may already be time to call Dr. Doom back in. Ten years after the pivotal underground hip-hop classic “Dr. Octagonecologyst,” Octagon’s return is unfortunately a rather anticlimactic affair. Gone are the hot scratches from DJ Q-Bert, the tight production from Dan the Automator and even a lot of the hilariously perverted flair from Keith himself. Don’t get me wrong, Kool Keith is as goofy as ever, but his rhymes are starting to lean more a bit more toward rambling nonsense than mad genius. Still, the novelty of seeing Dr. Octagon live in 2006 is pretty damn irresistible. Let’s hope his set leans heavily on the classics. (Brad Knutson)
