This week, the SummerDance DJ series returns to the outdoors for a final performance at the Petrillo Band Shell in Grant Park. Previous installments of the series were nomadic in nature, with fans of house and techno jacking and grooving at the Daley Center and Millennium Park. However, when fighting broke out, SummerDance was forced to complete its schedule indoors, way up on the North Side at Metro. The return to summer skies is worth your attendance for a couple of reasons: Derrick Carter and Cajmere, two men who have left an indelible mark on the Chicago house-music community. Chicago is where house music was born; Derrick and Caj turned that baby on its head in the mid-nineties with releases on seminal imprints, Cajual and Relief, and era-defining DJ sets. House has never been the same. This final episode of the SummerDance saga looks like it will provide Chicago with the vibe that the House Music Festival of the early summer meant to. For a large number of us, this is the house we grew up on. Derrick and Cajmere both have new projects on the way, so expect the classics as well as the jack-house these two are known for. Cajmere and Derrick Carter spin at the Petrillo Band Shell, 235 South Columbus, on August 23 from 6pm-9pm.
