Chicago electro-rock band Assassins recalls New Order-like dance pop with a harder, more distorted edge, matched with boy-girl double vocals and hypnotic, late-night melodies. “You Will Changed Us,” the band’s debut full-length on Chemicals Kill Records, features the epic, hook-laden songwriting of Irishmen leader Joe Cassidy—but the band’s already created quite a buzz having played shows with The Walkmen, Interpol and VHS or Beta. The material is easily radio-bound—pop-rock at its soul, a little dirtier live, and with just enough industrial blood pumping through its veins to keep the dark-hearted interested. Single “Guilty” benefits from both Cassidy’s and Merritt Lear’s vocals—powerful and dark, attention-grabbing even with all the electronics in the forefront. “You Will Changed Us” isn’t a perfect record—sometimes the synth-wave is a way too over-the-top and you wish the band would be more straightforward—but it’s undoubtedly an enjoyable one.
