The 2006 Chicago Jazz Festival gets underway with a ticketed performance that salutes the 80th birthday anniversary of John Coltrane by presenting a rare live performance of the landmark Coltrane double album “The Complete Africa/Brass Sessions” (Impulse) that were arranged for Coltrane’s quartet and Big Band and which took the group’s innovative Indian-influenced droning and thick block chords and enlarged them across the larger ensemble against group improvisations. The Joshua Redman Quartet takes the Coltrane Quartet role and Bob Belden conducts the Big Band, made up of local jazzers. Chicago singer Kurt Elling accompanied by saxophonist and pianist Ari Brown will open with a set of signature Coltrane ballads. (Dennis Polkow)
