Goofy rock band Let’s Get Out of This Terrible Sandwich Shop, to be sure, owes a bit to predecessors They Might Be Giants in its use of non sequitur humor and bubblegum, Farfisa-enforced pop, but not as much as everyone tries to make you believe. While the live shows are similar in their theatrics and lighthearted cheeseball rock, TMBG is a bit more cerebral, for sure. That’s not to say LGOOTTSS is better or worse, of course. Fronted by Second City performer Tony Mendoza, the band sings songs about sandwiches, bike lanes and magical hatchets and, in person, this three-piece is one of the most entertaining around, despite getting old really quickly on tape. Funny, childlike and frivolous, LGOOTTSS will pin your mouth ear to ear. (Tom Lynch)
