Brothers David and Stephen Dewaele are probably best known as the Belgian production duo 2 Many DJs. That being said, they’ve also managed to maintain a steady day gig over the years with their pals Stefaan Van Leuven and Steve Slingeneyer as the popular electro-dance-rockers Soulwax. Now in 2006, the brothers Dewaele are blurring the lines between the two projects with their latest album, “Nite Sessions,” released earlier this week on Modular Records. While technically credited as a Soulwax release, the album is a 2 Many DJs-like set of remixes that seamlessly flows together. However, rather than reworking their usual favorites like LCD Soundsystem and Daft Punk, David and Stephen decided to revisit their past Soulwax album, “Any Minute Now,” as their primary source material. “We liked the idea that during the eighties, bands would go back into the studio and re-record their tracks so they could be played in nightclubs,” explains Stephen. “We then took it one step further and decided it would be a challenge to then also play them live.”
The duo have dubbed this current tour “Radio Soulwax,” an homage to their club in Belgium where they regularly bring together some of the world’s finest DJs for raucous nights that strive to break the boundaries of styles and genres. “This is what we do when we have a Radio Soulwax Night [at home], we play live as Soulwax, then later DJ as 2 Many DJs and bring along friends,” says Stephen. David adds, “It looks like four Europeans in white raving with live instruments, [then] we close as 2 Many DJs… it’s supposed to be one big party.” In addition to the new record, the duo have also recently completed remixes for The Gossip and Robbie Williams and are even planning to make a movie documenting their current Radio Soulwax tour. So when working together remixing, producing, touring and now filming, does any Gallagher Brothers-like friction erupt between these two? “Of course,” says Stephen, “but at the end of the day he’s still my brother.” (Brad Knutson)
