Canadian techno-pop band Junior Boys returned this summer with “So This Is Goodbye” (Domino), another dive into the atmosphere of modest, whispery vocals and beats, heavy on the synthesizers and sparse on the guitars. The follow-up to the band’s 2004 record “Last Exit,” “So This Is Goodbye” doesn’t retrace its predecessor’s steps and, instead, improves on the group’s sound tenfold. Comparisons to Manitoba (or Caribou, if you like) are unavoidable, but the two bands have toured together extensively, and the similarities are a good thing. Justin Sconza, of Walter Meego, opens in support of “Paint by Numbers,” his seven-song release on Brilliante, which balances singer-songwriter-like acoustic guitar with subtle drums, piano and strings, plus minimal electronics. A convincing collection of songs, Sconza recalls the quieter David Bowie and his vocal melodies, Beatlesesque, are wonderfully sound. (Tom Lynch)
