Since cutting her DJ teeth in Detroit’s late nineties rave scene, Magda has been gaining some serious momentum. Early in her career she met her now-longtime friend and current roommate, techno legend Richie Hawtin. She made a name for herself early on playing Detroit’s System parties, combining electro, house and techno in her dance-floor-rocking sets. These days she’s the reigning queen of the minimal techno movement, although she tends to shy away from the term “minimal,” feeling that Chicago Jack and Acid play equally important roles in her signature sound. Her momentum continues to grow with the release of her first mix CD on Hawtin’s M_nus label (boasting an impressive seventy-one tracks) and a growing number of remixes on various labels released in the past few years. Magda touches down at Smart Bar tonight in support of her new mix CD “She’s a Dancing Machine.” She’s only booked three North American dates for this tour, so be sure to catch her while you can. With Paco Osuna and Kate Simko. (Nathaniel Smith)
