If Ritalin was in dire need of a few spokespersons, who better than Matt and Kim? The Brooklyn duo has taken the Mates of State girl/boy/drummer/piano template and injected mind-numbing giddiness, boiling down its message to choruses of “Yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah” and “Yes, yes! No, no!” Anyone who’s witnessed the duo live can attest to the gleeful restlessness of both performers, who clearly wish they weren’t confined to their instruments, that they could run around naked and play faster, faster! Dripping with fake strings, Matt and Kim may ostensibly sound like cheesy eighties synth-pop, but something about the band’s newest record, “Grand,” seems to spurn such an easy comparison. Credit for this should probably go to Kim’s impatient drumming style, which replaces the usual drum machine and supplies beats that are not only organic but also totally danceable. Prepare to jump, spasm and inexplicably sweat sugar. (Andy Seifert)
