Nachtmystium’s 2008 record “Assassins: Black Meddle, Part 1” sent me on a dark, treacherous journey through lots and lots of extreme metal from which I have not fully recovered. The Chicago band’s full-throttle record—with hints of both black metal and even classic-rock riffage—is so amazing that no metal album has matched it since. Leader Blake Judd’s throat tears my stomach out and stomps it into oblivion. The band’s recent EP, “Doomsday Derelicts,” continues the devastation trend with odes of epic fury, angry and unbridled, hellbent on pounding anything near to an unrecognizable pulp. The guitar solos featured on tracks “Hellish Overdose” and “Pitch Black Cadence” shred you to pieces, and the coda of the latter will give you the confidence of a lion. Furious, commanding stuff, and totally fucking awesome. (Tom Lynch)
