“Your marketing should look as good as all the effort that you put into everything else,” says Scott Jackson, who founded a conference focused on helping groups improve their business sense. “There’s just some point where you understand that you need to be making what you’re worth.” But Jackson isn’t talking about your average business conference: it’s way more hardcore than that. Jackson, also known as “The Monsterman,” is talking heavy metal. Heavy metal bands won’t be wearing business casual anytime soon, but they do need to get their act together—offstage, that is. “Sure, you may have kept some sort of integrity intact, but it’s no fun when you’re starving,” says Jackson, a graphic designer and illustrator who specializes in heavy metal album covers. Metal Mergence, Chicago’s fourth annual heavy metal conference, gives heavy metal bands the local, insider scoop on making it big. Bands can meet reps, tape demos, speak with vendors and maybe even get signed. They’ll also get to see live performances by Souls Demise, Lair of the Minotaur, Earthen Grave, Mindwarp Chamber, Falsefaced, Malas and First Jason (the band of Ari Lehman, who played Jason in the first “Friday the 13th” film). Now, that’s a pretty good reason to hold a business conference on a Friday night. (Ella Christoph)
