Shake Rattle & Read has been in Ric Addy’s family since 1966, and he treats his customers like a part of that family. When he bought the bookstore from his sister in the eighties, he added the rock ‘n’ roll component: music, collectibles (including some Elvis memorabilia) and the plastic-wrapped music magazines that cover the walls. The long alleys of shelves packed with piles of used books still give it the comforting musty smell of a library, but now the store carries cassettes, 8-tracks, vinyl and CDs of all genres, with a significant selection of rock, jazz and soul. Everything is used, except records from local labels Bloodshot and Numero Group, and for the wallet-conscious collector, well-priced: most LPs are only a few dollars. (Shaunacy Ferro)
