In this first of three area appearances this week and concluding the Chicago Chamber Musicians’ spring 2006 three-concert “Composer Perspectives” series, clarinetist and composer Paquito D’Rivera will premiere his new work, “Three Poems from the New World,” inspired by the poems “And Your Grandma, Where She At!?” by Puerto Rican poet Fortunato Villarrondo, “A Very Simple Song” by Cuban poet José Martí and “Blues for Akoka” by American poet and current NEA Chairman Dana Gioia, incorporating the fusion of jazz elements and Latin rhythms, which has become D’Rivera’s signature. Also featured on the program, which is co-sponsored by the Grant Park Music Festival, will be music of Mexican composer Silvestre Revueltas, Brazil’s Heitor Villa-Lobos and Aaron Copland’s “Appalachian Spring” in its original chamber version and Samuel Barber’s String Quartet with its haunting “Adagio.” (Dennis Polkow)
