A set from Ed Rush and Optical generates buzz for the duo’s ability to blend classics and dubplates, dancefloor or underground—and without a game plan. Spontaneous is one word for it, but understanding crowd dynamics works, too. The success of “Wormhole,” their first album, launched their careers, making them ubiquitous on a worldwide level. It’s lucky for us that Chicago is a favorite destination. Though their peak has passed, Ed Rush and Optical drop signature dark-step rollers, mixed with more recent styles, and can still get a party moving. With the installation of a sick Funktion One soundsystem, Smart Bar should be no different. The room will shake as Ed and Optical man the decks; those used to experiencing the pair in larger venues should not pass up the opportunity to see them in an intimate setting. (John Alex Colón)
