Liars changed direction and course with their latest, “Drum’s Not Dead,” a total revamping of the band and massive leap forward after their underwhelming “They Were Wrong, So We Drowned.” The band jetted off to Germany to write and record this one—a conceptual battle between invented characters Drum and Mr. Heart Attack, leader Angus Andrews’ high-pitched musings confronting sweeping guitar work and layered melodies. The record is, by far, the band’s highest achievement, as the balance of gut-punch rock and gentle, sweet delivery prove sewn together with the greatest of ease, its ambiance and mood so endearing and soulful. Unexpected to say the least, Liars’ “Drum’s Not Dead” experiments without regard and comes out clean on the other side. Have no doubt, this can be a bit unnerving, but in the end it’s worth it.
