The Grant Park Orchestra and Taste of Chicago have been peculiar bedfellows since the inception of the popular and often noisy food festival, but the music is fighting back this year with 9pm and later concert starting times. It’s New Year’s Eve in late June as Viennese native and Grant Park Orchestra principal conductor Carlos Kalmar and Dutch violinist Isabelle van Kuelen pour the champagne six months early with a program of popular waltzes and violin showpieces from Vienna, including Johann Strauss Jr.’s “Banditen Galopp,” “Polka Schnell,” “Annen-Polka,” “Kuenstlerleben Walzer,” “Tritsch-Tratsch Polka” and the “Wiener Blut Walzer,” Josef Strauss’ “Frauenherz,” “Polka Mazurka” and “Dorfschwalben aus Oesterreich Walzer,” as well as waltzes by Lanner, Kreisler and Eduard Strauss.
June 30 at Pritzker Pavilion, Michigan Avenue between Randolph and Monroe, (312)742-7638. 9pm. Free.
