Flameshovel Records artists Lying in States have decided to call it a day, far too prematurely, as its brand of dark, moody rock separated it from its label mates. Live, the band never disappointed, a loud, distortion-filled affair that kept the songs as uncomplicated as they could be—finer in person than on the record. Playing along are emo-indie local cats The Narrator, equally as impressive live with complex song structures and powerful, blasting vocals. Also, Tense Forms’ artist The Notes and Scratches joins the bill, one of the most exciting new local acts, which mixes Tom Waits’ vocal gruff, Neutral Milk Hotel’s multi-instrumental ambition and strange, fuzzed-out acoustic mayhem. The band’s “Uh-oh” was one of the best local releases of last year. This is definitely a bill to see. (Tom Lynch)
