Yang Wei is a master of the pipa, a semi-pear-shaped sound box with four strings that is the Chinese solo instrument of choice and that has a history back to the Qin dynasty (221-207 B.C.). Wei moved to the States a decade ago and has performed regularly as a member of Yo-Yo Ma’s Silk Road Ensemble since its founding. On this free lunchtime concert that is part of the Silk Road Chicago 2006 series, Wei performs a solo recital of traditional Chinese repertoire, but will also showcase some of his innovative experiments that creatively cross-fertilize key elements of the music of the East and West.
