Glenn Underground has been around the block more than a few times. He’s seen house come into existence, diverge into endless classifications and curry favor with one crowd of Johnny-come-latelys after another. He has seen the fabled days of the Music Box, the Warehouse, the Milwaukee Street loft parties, the raves and the expensive mega-clubs. And he’s been spinning and producing throughout it all. If you ask him what kind of music he plays he’ll tell you simply “House.” And if you ask what kind, he’ll shake his head and walk away saying, “House is house.” But his one-line explanation of how he chose his artist name yields a little more to those who’ve never heard him play: “Man, I’m so deep, I’m under the ground!” While soulful jazz undertones characterize his sound, he knows how to work a dancefloor into a jubilant mess. The rare appearance from Boo Williams, another longstanding stalwart of the soulful side of house, will make Mr. Underground’s birthday bash a true friends and family affair. (Melissa Lane)
