The dance-rock and aggressive pop of Detroit’s Thunderbirds Are Now! advances into darker territory with the upcoming “Make History” (French Kiss Records), the band’s new effort. It sounds angrier and more assured, with chant-promising choruses and mean, biting guitars. I liked the irony and the pacing of the previous “Justamoustache,” but this record seems more solid and confident, and the opener “Panthers in Crime,” while a little long, has some very enticing melodies and breakdowns. The cheese-synth in the following track “The Veil Comes Down” works well, and the song’s chorus has live-hit all over it. The sound is immediate, the rapid-fire pop smartly doesn’t let up or ever give you a chance to breathe. Even when the band begins to get a little obnoxious vocally and rhythmically, like on “Why We War,” it bounces back with more guitar/keyboard mayhem. Start hopping up and down now. (Tom Lynch)
