Imagine Sun-Ra meets Tower of Power with some Living Colour thrown in for good measure and you get a sense of the abstract, high-energy brassy sound world of the eight-piece collective Liquid Soul, which is making a homecoming of sorts back to the Chicago club world where it began more than a decade ago in support of its new album “One-Two Punch” (Telarc) which is a zany, colorful and kaleidoscopic take on a number of styles from world music, free jazz, soul, hip-hop and fusion that never loses its groove and its take-no-prisoners funk. Where else can DJ turntables mix with seventies wah-wah guitar and make it sound like something new? (Dennis Polkow)
