Washington, DC’s Ian MacKaye and Amy Farina formed The Evens five years ago during a Fugazi hiatus, played some random shows and eventually recorded and released a self-titled record last year on MacKaye’s Dischord Records. It was a bit less immediate than Fugazi material, with MacKaye on guitar and voice and Farina on drums, intimate and folk-like in execution, not what you would expect from MacKaye (live, they even sit down). This month’s follow-up, “Get Evens,” expands on that record, falling into a solid collection of songs that feature MacKaye’s droning, bass-y guitar and Farina’s soft vocals. Political and biting, it’s a fine, memorable record in all. Playing at strange venues is apparently the band’s ambition—tonight is no exception—nor is involving the crowd, so expect some good, weird fun. (Tom Lynch)
