The Brooklyn-based duo of Matt and Kim fall into a long line of boy-girl couples glowingly making music together—like Mates of State, the The Like Young, local cats J+J+J—in which the intimacy and free-for-all joy come across with reckless abandon. As you might guess, this is candy-pop to the extreme—dance-inducing with sweet-tooth flavor, an honest intensity and good-ole-time melody. With Kim on drums and Matt on the keys and vocals, the couple injects wholehearted energy into its self-titled debut, on IHEARTCOMIX, frantic ardor bursting at the seams. Is there much there? It’s hard to say at this point, after only one record. It’s easy for this kind of excursion to become far too much of a sugar high over time, but in the moment, when the crowd swarms, it’s a pleasure, a balancer of serotonin levels for the cold Chicago months.
