Does anyone expect anything short of completely fucked up from a band that includes David Yow? Late last year the enigmatic singer—of Jesus Lizard and Scratch Acid notoriety—joined Paul Christensen and Matt Cronk in Qui, a mashing of metal, punk, noise rock and outright experimental diversion. “Love’s Miracle,” Qui’s latest record on Ipecac Recordings, is dutifully charged with guitar riffing, incessant droning drums and goofy but enlightened vocals from all three. Cue thwarting time-signature changes and off-key deliveries. A bizarre emptiness oozes from the record, however, as it seems the songs could’ve been fleshed out a bit more, or even reined in, but it is nice to hear to the distorted yelp of the song “Gash.” Paranoia, idiosyncrasy, insomnia, fear, all in a bundle. Yow happens. (Tom Lynch)
