This past year has seen an emergence of the dubstep sound as a legitimate and viable format amongst the ongoing traditions of UK dance music. Like hardcore, jungle, drum ‘n’ bass and UK garage before it, dubstep has developed into a diverse and varied production style full of colorful and unique producers. One such producer is London’s Plastician (formerly known as Plasticman), perhaps best known for his stellar work on the Rephlex label’s “Grime” compilations. Plastician’s sound is one that straddles the line between grime and dubstep, perhaps more so than most of the scene’s big names. Stylistic nuances aside, it’s an entirely edgey and very street sound with a characteristically unhealthy obsession with the low-end. Those keeping tabs on the sound know that this set will be an essential one. (Jarrett Spiegel)
