Duran Duran blaze into town to pose some serious questions—for instance, how much would you pay to help these dinosaurs relive their glory days? Or, how many hoops would a has-been New Wave band jump through to completely erode any sense of originality or musicianship? Maybe that’s a bit harsh, but I’m still all riled up over the disappointment of the Timbaland-produced “Red Carpet Massacre.” With such a talented producer in tow, the album should have blown minds, but it’s a lackluster attempt that simply doesn’t work. They had Timbaland, for goodness sake! It’s hard to say if this desperate miss can be attributed to the loss of guitarist Andy Taylor, or to the unfortunate posturing of a band that’s just sick of playing its hits. A step above easy listening, the album may disappoint, but there’s a glimmer of hope that the boys—er, middle-aged men—of Duran Duran can pull it together in a live environment. (K.
