It seems like it’s been forever since Mr. Scruff has come to Chicago. But that doesn’t mean that this Manchester native has been sitting around at home eating pie and drinking tea. Keeping a busy tour schedule that takes him around the world and releasing tracks on Ninja Tune have kept him very busy. Luckily for us though, he has found the time to make an appearance at Smart Bar to deliver one of his signature six-hour sets. Anyone who has witnessed one of his marathon performances has no doubt been marking off days on the calendar in anticipation. Controlling a club’s atmosphere for an entire evening is what Scruff does best; chilling you out, bringing you up and then right back down again as he spans the spectrum of music. From funk, to house, from drum ‘n’ bass to jazz, he’ll spin just about anything, as long as it’s got “soul.” Accompanying him will be his usual cartoon companions, an assortment of characters from Scruff’s own imagination, brought to life on projection screens. There is a discounted price before midnight, so forget about being fashionably late. Go early, stay late and be prepared to have fun with one of the world’s most lovable DJs. (Zeb Resman)
Mr. Scruff plays a six-hour set at Smart Bar, 3730 North Clark, (773)549-0203, December 14 from 10pm-4am. $10 before midnight, $15 after.
