New York indie faves The Walkmen rose from the nineties alternative ashes of Jonathan Fire*Eater (of which guitar/piano man Paul Maroon and organ/bass player Walter Martin were a part of) to release three emotionally charged LPs of original music, and a bizarre-yet-compelling track-for-track cover album in Harry Nilsson’s Lennon-produced 1974 album “Pussy Cats.” Few bands seemed to capture urban ennui and atrophied hearts displayed in 2004’s “The Rat,” in which singer Hamilton Leithauser laments: “When I used to go out I would know everyone that I saw. Now I go out alone if I go out at all.” Well, after tonight’s show at Schubas, head to Evil Olive for the Official Walkmen Afterparty, which features some folks you definitely do know, specifically members of the band who’ll be trading in their instruments for decks, along with Dark Wave Disco’s resident Greg Corner, who also plays bass in Kill Hannah. After sticking to Top 40 and mainstream hip-hop, Evil Olive is taking more chances with its programming (including their Saturday and Monday nights), and tonight is another step at (hopefully) more relevant programming at the former Big Wig spot.
