Rising from the roller-rink glam of the early 1980s, Debbie Deb defined the freestyle scene with a kind of pouty playfulness that put her at the forefront of a costal dance movement. Born in Brooklyn and raised in North Miami Beach, Deb had all the early makings of a glossy pop tart from the start. When iconic freestyle producer Pretty Tony discovered her in a Miami record store when she was 16, the chemistry was instantaneous. He and Deb went on to record the laser-laden mega hit, “When I Hear Music,” which the two co-wrote. With follow-up hits including “Lookout Weekend,” “I Wanna Work It Out” and “I Wanna Dance,” Deb became an iconic voice for a lacquered pop scene that continues to revive itself, even twenty years later. Tonight, Deb brings bangles-and-jellies back to the scene, with a stilted set of hard-candy lyrics that make everyone remember why weekends were made for fun. All skate, everyone. (Jenn Danko)
