James Curd’s recent collection of work on Aroma sub-label A Second Smell has invigorated the underground house scene with a fresh, electronic-based vibe. Migrating from past catalogues of sample-heavy work, Curd is more recently turning tracks that bump with the same notable funk but favor a more angular, stripped-down feel. The instrumental groover, “Pick Up What I am Putting Down,” has steadily remained a top grab on the digital download sites, while a string of releases on Inland Knights’ Drop Music label prove that Curd is as creatively tenacious as he is talented. J-Dub’s help on the tight, vocal rouser on “Buffalo Girl” rips crowds with a metallic brand of funk that proves Curd is reaching beyond organic boundaries. While his role as DJ with Chicago’s own Greenskeepers may have helped established his name, his increasingly evolving style has landed his sound on some of underground house’s most accredited labels. Tonight, the cheeky boys from The Sound Republic, alongside Bunchlox helmer Karl Almaria, host Curd for his own notable session of dirty grooves. (Jenn Danko)
