The opportunity to hear all three of the Brahms Violin Sonatas in a single program performed by one of the greatest violin virtuosos on the planet is rare indeed, so this is definitely an occasion to be savored. In fact, this hasn’t happened here since the early 1990s when Perlman and Barenboim did the same thing for a video concert. German violinist Anne-Sophie Mutter is a protégée of the late Herbert von Karajan and has been playing professionally since she was a teenager, but her maturity has given her interpretations more depth, like an aged wine. Curiously, while the straight tone that she used to get for Mozart has disappeared on her more recent recordings, her vibrato has decreased for large-scale Romantic composers like Brahms. Her longtime pianist Lambert Orkis will join her for what should be a very special afternoon of music-making. (Dennis Polkow)
