Kevin Saunderson should really need no introduction around these parts. At this point, Saunderson is widely considered one of the founding fathers of Detroit techno and his stake in the techno landscape can only be equaled by his early associates Juan Atkins and Derrick May. The three together, and individually, are perhaps the genre’s most influential and enduring figures. It is easy to forget though that despite Derrick May’s enormous popularity and the success of Juan Atkins’ Model 500 and Cybotron projects, it is Saunderson who has likely seen the most commercial success of the three over their storied careers. His various aliases including Kreem (with Juan Atkins), Reese, E-Dancer and namely Inner City have enjoyed massive success worldwide with an estimated 12 Inner City singles hitting top-40 status in the UK. Additionally, after more than twenty years of productivity, Saunderson’s KMS label (home to many of the genre’s most important early singles) continues to this very day, pushing the music forward and into the future.
