If the lineup at the opening Saturday edition of Jackson has you waxing a bit nostalgic you would not be alone. Long-time Chicago promoters Meiotic and ApSerps chose the inaugural Saturday-night edition of their increasingly popular Jackson series of events to welcome home, for one night only, Atomly, Sassmouth and Brandon Invergo, a trio of Chicago DJs and producers who have left the city to pursue new opportunities abroad and elsewhere in the United States.
“I originally left [in 2006] to take a trip around the world with my best friend,” writes Atomly. “We made it as far as Berlin.” While in Berlin, Atomly reports that he immersed himself in the culture and lifestyle of the city that has made the German capital a veritable mecca for club kids the world over, visiting and gigging at some of the city’s best-known venues, including Watergate and Club der Visionaere. Living in Berlin, says Atomly, “also gave me much easier access to gigs in places I’d never played before… Then one afternoon I walked out of a club, probably Club der Visionaere or Berghain, and realized I’d been there for a year.”
Following that year in Berlin Atomly has returned to the United States, settling in New York City, where he remains a fixture in that city’s burgeoning electronic-music scene, performing a mix of deep minimal and house music at a number of events and after-parties, and by day writing music and software.
Though not expressly denying a return to Chicago on a more permanent basis, Atomly responds regarding his current home, “I love New York, I love it so much that I wish they made a t-shirt that let me tell the world how much I loved it.”
As for Sassmouth and Invergo, both have left to pursue career options both in and outside of the global club scene, with the former relocating to London and performing numerous shows in both the United Kingdom and South America, and the latter pursuing a Masters Degree in Biology at the University of Leiden in the Netherlands.
If you have never heard of Leiden, Invergo writes that it is “a smallish city between The Hague and Amsterdam. Rembrandt van Rijn was born here, the [Mayflower] pilgrims lived here for a while before sailing to the New World, and [Albert] Einstein, [Winston] Churchill and [Rene] Descartes all spent time at the university. Also, Armin van Buuren was born here, but I try not to let that affect my day-to-day life.”
While pursuing his degree, Invergo admits that he hasn’t had much time to pursue DJing at the level he did here in Chicago, where he became well known for his minimal techno and tech-house sets, but, he says, “eventually the itch to DJ started to really grow and I started back up again back in the spring. I played a couple of gigs over the summer and I did a set on a radio station, but that’s about all so far. I plan on picking up the pace with the gigs after I return from Chicago in September. I’ve already got a couple of things lined up but I’m aiming to take it to the next level.” Invergo adds, “[Most] of my DJing has been via recorded sets. I’ve started a podcast for my mixes; the main focus of this has actually not been my usual techno/house stuff but rather for chill-out sets that consist of ambient, IDM, downtempo, indie rock, etc.”
The returning trio are also joined by the MSDJZ, aka Matt Martin and Vlad Grocic, who emerge from their shadowy lair to get the “crunk” on, so to speak, starting at 9pm.
Atomly, Sassmouth, Brandon Invergo and the MSDJZ perform at the new Saturday night Jackson party at Lava, 1270 North Milwaukee, (773)342-5282, on August 16, 9pm-3am. $10, $7 with rsvp to going.com.
