Active in the music business from an early age, Puerto Rican-born Luis Miguel was at first mentored by his father, who instructed him to study old Elvis Presley videos in order to learn how to create a stage persona. He quickly became a celebrity in Latin America, and after signing with a major label in 1987, he was well on his path of becoming an internationally renowned entertainer—a goal he achieved with his 1990 coming-of-age album “20 Años,” which marked his transition from teen to adult performer. Throughout his career, Miguel has tackled various genres, including traditional boleros, Mariachi music and pop—though he is much more comfortable belting out songs of love that make his female supporters swoon, as has been the case of the current tour in support of his “Complices,” his latest disc on Warner Latina. Critics at previous gigs have not been kind to him, having often stated that the two-hour show is too controlled, lacking the spontaneity that is often common among Latin performers. Not that the fans care about what these writers have to say—they all flock to the stage, tossing flowers, teddy bears and other unmentionables on stage while singing along to “Hasta Que Me Olvides,” “No Se Tu” and pretty much every other tuneon the menu.
