On December 11, local label Drag City Records—best known for their specialization in experimental indie-rock acts—hosts a release party at Intuit Gallery for “I Want to Go Where Things Are Beautiful,” the first-ever (not to mention, posthumous) solo CD of coal miner, union activist and folk singer Nimrod Workman. Although the party is a celebration of beginnings (Nimrod’s solo career, for one), it is more a culmination of creative connections. “I was talking with my friend [Drag City artist] Will Oldham one day about all this music I wished could come out,” explains Nathan Salsburg, Production Manager and Catalog Editor for the Alan Lomax Archive, “and he says that maybe his label would be interested.” The rest is history. Salsburg began work with Drag City and created his imprint, Twos & Fews. Workman’s CD and accompanying LP is the imprint’s first project. Just as Salsburg seems to fit perfectly with Drag City (and Workman with Twos & Fews), Intuit seems a fitting venue for the party. “I used to intern at Intuit,” explains Nicole Yalaz of Drag City, “and I thought it, as a venue for outsider art, would be the perfect place for Workman’s release.” (Meaghan Strickland)
