Formed by local young musicians with a love for classical music, the Cervantes Orchestra aims for “the education of emerging artists to the spirit of playing together in an ideal and inspiring environment, the orchestra, representing the diversity of our multicultural society.” For their upcoming presentations under the direction of Emanuele Andrizzi, they will be focusing on lesser-known works by Spanish and Latin American composers such as Brazil’s Heitor Villa-Lobos (“Bachianas Brasileiras nr. 4,” one of his best-known compositions), M. de Falla and A. Romero. The musicians are selected through auditions and mentoring processes, and frequently get to attend master classes in order to improve their skills and broaden their musical horizons. All its members come from diverse ethnic backgrounds that reflect on the melting pot that is the city of Chicago, and the Institute’s program gives an opportunity to showcase talent that would arguably remain unheard otherwise.
