Icelandic musician and composer Johann Johannsson visits the United States nearly nine months after his latest release, “Fordlandia,” on 4AD. The breathtaking collection, piled with sweeping and gorgeous string arrangements sprinkled with electronic pulses and droplets, creates a vast sonic landscape, glacial, heavenly and sky blue sky, take me away. The endless title-track opener—”endless” in that it stretches for a grand eternity and lasts well beyond its literal length—is terrifically paced; Johannsson’s in no rush to show us his vision. Later, on “Fordlandia—Aerial View,” he offers a somber string collection fit for a screen of epic size; the strings weep from above. The elements of IDM that he includes in this package only enhance the material, a true testament to his talent, seeing that in lesser hands it would merely take away. Live, who knows what Johansson has planned, but in a venue as intimate as the Lakeshore Theater, it should be one to remember. (Tom Lynch)
