As Matthew Dear’s Audion project touches down this weekend at Smart Bar, the “what-will-he-do-this-time” question is on the lips of techno fans. The North Side haunt is one of a handful of U.S. clubs to host the 2009 iteration of Audion’s live show, which is but one reason this qualifies as a must-attend event. Consider the jam delivered by Ghostly International in August and Audion’s relentlessly sexy set at the Movement Festival in May. Perhaps you’d rather consider the slew of singles as both Audion and Jabberjaw recently released on Ghostly and Spectral, or the upcoming “Push,” due in December. Regardless, Dear’s stamp on techno is absolute and his tendency to slide from dark and minimal to sparse and sexy aural environs illustrates the very purpose of a dance floor. (John Alex Colon)
