The work of local songwriter Annie Reese, the music of Rock Falls fits the somber, dark, solitary evenings we all have awaiting us in the treacherous Chicago months of January and February. Sparse arrangements—often just an aching guitar and Reese’s whispery, lonely voice—create a melancholic ambiance that’s so much more than traditional singer-songwriter expulsion. (On her “Perpetual Love,” Reese literally whispers her vocals.) Rock Falls’ compositions are miniature symphonies of tender introspection and late-night bedroom rock, bleak maybe, sometimes cold, but never ever simple. This is a talent that shouldn’t go ignored. Rock Falls plays as part of this week’s Cardboard Sangria Showcase at Schubas; Roommate and Royal Osprey fill out the bill. (Tom Lynch)
