Since leaving Chicago for sunny Los Angeles a couple years ago, Lee Foss has been busy establishing himself as a fast-rising producer of spacey, trippy dance-floor mutations that have found a home on labels like Wolf + Lamb and Culprit—the LA-based upstart that last year released both Foss’ solo debut EP “The Edge,” and Hot Natured’s “h.e.a.d.s.” (Foss’ partnership with good friend and established UK superstar Jamie Jones). On full display on “The Edge” were all the trademarks of Foss’ style; weird, mid-tempo dance-floor oddities, tastefully restrained and laced with just a touch of echoing soulfulness. Those trademarks and a great ear for melody do well in elevating Foss as a DJ, for no matter how hazy, crazy and drugged-out the sounds might seem to get, they’re always anchored to a solid groove, controlled with Foss’ discrete hand. Tapped to open for his share of touring DJs when he resided in Chicago, Foss now returns as a headliner, with good friends and former party partners Orchard Lounge set to open. Orchard Lounge are among the new set of Smart Bar residents for 2010, and while they might have grown more accustomed over the past few years to playing for thousands of festival goers and even headlining their own tours, the trio are rarely booked elsewhere in their hometown, making tonight a great night out for lovers of a deep and sophisticatedly weird dance floor.
